EPISODE #860

September 29, 2008 (Monday)

1.  INT - ZEGAS HOME IN MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY

SAM and STACEY have just arrived for dinner and are greeted by ALAN in the foyer.

ALAN

It’s good to see you, son.   And… I didn’t realize you would be bringing a guest.

SAM

Dad, this is Stacey Gamage.  She’s been working at Channel 6 with me for a while now.

ALAN

(noticing how young Stacey is)

O-kay.  Well, welcome to our home, Stacey.

STACEY

Thanks.  It’s nice to meet you.

Alan, Sam and Stacey make their way into the living room.

SAM

Where’s Mom?

MAGGIE walks in from the kitchen.

MAGGIE

Here I am.

(sees the very young Stacey with her son)

Oh, dear.  Who do we have here?

SAM

Mom, this is Stacey.  A friend and co-worker.

MAGGIE

A friend?  How old are you, sweetie?

STACEY

I’m 20.

MAGGIE

Oh my, Sam, you can’t be serious.

ALAN

(trying to diffuse the awkwardness)

Why don’t we all have a seat?

Stacey and Sam sit on the sofa while Alan and Maggie each sit in a chair across from them.

MAGGIE

It’s good to see you, son.  I was beginning to wonder if we would ever see you in our house again.

SAM

I’ve just been busy, Mom.

MAGGIE

I can see that.

STACEY

Mrs. Zegas, Sam is my boss.  We’re not dating or anything.

MAGGIE

Lovely.

ALAN

Sam isn’t dating anyone apparently.  It looks like we’ll never have grandchildren.

MAGGIE

Well, thank God.  Do I look like a grandmother to you?  Why are you in such a rush to get old, Alan?

ALAN

It’s natural to want grandchildren, Maggie.

SAM

Enough talk about grandchildren.  That isn’t happening anytime soon.  If ever.

STACEY

(to Maggie)

Sam told me on the way out there that you used to work in TV news as well.

MAGGIE

Now talk about ancient history.  I did some special reports for a local station in upstate New York when I first got out of college.  But my life dramatically changed once Alan and I married.

ALAN

For the better, of course.

MAGGIE

(sarcastically)

Yes.  Who wouldn’t love my life here in beautiful Montclair, New Jersey.

ALAN

What are you trying to say?

SAM

(changing the subject)

So Dad, Mack was really happy to see you the other day.  He’s serious about bringing Marty out here.

ALAN

Tell him to do it.

MAGGIE

Stacey, would you mind helping me out in the kitchen for a minute?

STACEY

Uh, no.  I don’t know how much help I will be though.

Maggie and Stacey make their way into the kitchen.

STACEY

I’m not really much of a cook.

MAGGIE

That’s fine.  I brought you in here to get a straight answer.  Are you sleeping with my son?

STACEY

Excuse me?

MAGGIE

It’s a simple yes or no question?

STACEY

Mrs. Zegas, Sam is my boss, and we’ve become friends.

MAGGIE

Are you lying or are just incredibly naïve?  Why would my 30-something son bring a 20 year old girl to meet his parents?

STACEY

I….I don’t know.  He wanted another friendly face here I guess.

MAGGIE

Let me give you a piece of advice, Stacey.  Men always one thing on their minds, and I think you know what that is.  So wise up.

STACEY

There’s nothing going on between Sam and me.

MAGGIE

Not yet.   Look, I don’t want to ruin our evening.   But where do you want to be 20 or 30 years from now?  With a booming career in the city?  Or making dinners for your family in the suburbs?

STACEY

I haven’t really thought about it.

MAGGIE

Well, do think about it.  I sometimes lie at wake at night wondering what my life would have been had I made different choices.

STACEY

I’m not sure what to say.

MAGGIE

Oh, listen to me.  I probably shouldn’t have said anything.  I haven’t felt “good’ about things since my son, Joe, died.

STACEY

I’m really sorry about that.

MAGGIE

Look, why don’t you go back and join Alan and Sam.  I’ll be right in.

STACEY

Okay.

Stacey walks out of the kitchen.

MAGGIE

(to herself)

Now where are my damned pills?

Maggie opens a few drawers and finds a bottle of pills, opens it and takes one.

MAGGIE

(sighs)

Hold it together, Maggie.

2.  INT – JACKSON’S OFFICE AT ENDICOTT SOFTWARE

JACKSON is is working at his desk when his private line rings and he picks up.

                 JACKSON

Jackson Endicott.

                 STU

Hello, Jackie.  It’s Stu Adler.  How the hell are you?

                 JACKSON

What you do you want, Adler?  You got your money.

                 STU

That’s the thing.  The upgrades to my garage are going to cost a little more than I had originally anticipated.

                 JACKSON

Then perhaps you should lower your expectations.

                 STU

Actually, I was thinking that another ten grand would help me make things perfect.  You wouldn’t want me to work in a half-finished garage, would you?

                 JACKSON

I wouldn’t care if you fell off the face of the earth.  Scratch that, I would be delighted.

                 STU

You’re such a sweet talker.  Look, let’s get serious for a minute.  If you don’t want the world to know about your relationship with my sister and what came of it, you’ll have that money in my possession by tomorrow morning.

          JACKSON

And what if I don’t care?

          STU

You obviously don’t want this little secret to come out or else you wouldn’t have paid me the first time.

          JACKSON

I’m not going to let you extort money from me on an ongoing basis, Mr. Adler.  You’ll be sorry you ever crossed me.

Hannah knocks on the open door and walks in.

          HANNAH

Jackson?  Is everything alright?
