Stalkers! Adultery! Corporate intrigue! Alcoholism! Sugar Mommas! All this and more can be found at Scripts & Scruples, an honest-to-God daily web-radio soap that will take your memory back to the days of yore ... assuming you were around in the 1930s-50s that is.
S&S takes place in NYC and tells the tale of nice but too-trusting magazine journalist Raven, her kinda selfish husband Mack, her best friend and editor Perry, Mack's closest friend (and stalking victim) Rex, and Raven's fellow writer/backstabbing friend Alexandra, who has her sights set on Mack.
Episodes are very short, so the download won't try your patience too much. The shortness is also a plus since the amateur actors are ... erm, how shall I put this kindly? ... well, let's just say you won't confuse them with Orsen Welles' classic Mercury Radio Theater troupe, that's for sure.
Take heart, though: the uneven acting is no reflection of the writing quality. Scenes are tight (they have to be with so little time!), and the funny and poignant writing successfully draws depth from the small cast of leads and growing number of supporting players. So far my favorite characters are Perry, Raven's gay (but sadly currently unattached) friend with a troublesome alkie mom; good guy and stalking victim Rex (who has a crush on Raven); and Adriana, the disturbed, abused stalker with a secret family connection to one of the main players.
In a clever and considerate move, the S&S crew provide each day's script on the website after broadcast, which is a blessing for those of us who a) have slow modem connections, and/or b) prefer reading the zippy scripts to listening to some not-so-hot (but improving!) performances. Log on to Radio Loger each day at 10AM and 10PM for episodes. Lots of fun and drama await you there.
