| While romance
might abound in the rest of this issue,
you won't find much of it in this particular
article. Why? Because these characters
haven't seen it in quite a long time
(in some cases, ever). Read on to discover
whom in the world of online fiction
is most in need of Cupid's arrow...
or at least, a box of candy to dull
the ache. |
Dave Warner:
(Coral Valley)

Dave Warner is the
kind of guy that every woman would love
to fall in love with. He's loyal, dedicated,
a true romantic to the core, yet this Coral
Valley police chief finds him on the wrong
side of Cupid's path. Not only does this
good guy stay true to those important people
in his life, but time after time he's taken
a stand and done the right thing regardless
of what it might cost him in the long run.
Dave is Coral Valley's ultimate good guy,
yet when it comes to romance he seems to
have been batting zero.

Dave's first true heartbreak
came in the form of Deidra Stevens (now Byrne). Having
secretly loved her from afar during his teen years,
Dave longed for her in silence, hoping that one day
Deidra would realize that his feelings ran deeper than
friendship. However, his heart was shattered when Deidra
and his best friend Kenneth Ashford became an item.
Though Ken and Deidra's romance didn't last much longer
than a few months, Dave was still pushed aside when
Deidra fell head over heels for his other friend Andrew
Byrne. From that moment on, Deidra and Andy were hopelessly
in love leaving Coral Valley to start their new lives
together as husband and wife, thus leaving Dave behind
and broken hearted knowing that the one he'd cared the
most for got away.
After Dave's heartbreak with
Deidra, he buried himself in his work, really attempting
to do something with his life--anything to forget the
woman that he'd let get away. It was in those years
that he met Carly Matthews, a sexy, sassy law student
that captured his heart at long last. Dave and Carly's
romance started strong going hot and heavy leading up
to their eventual engagement. However, when Carly finally
found her dreams of being a hot shot lawyer coming true,
she was offered a position out of state far from Coral
Valley, thus leaving Dave in the cold. Despite the fact
that Carly asked Dave to go with her, he ultimately
stayed behind to continue with his newfound career move
in becoming the youngest police chief in the history
of Coral Valley.
Once Carly was out of Dave's
life, he'd found himself so absorbed in work that there
was no time for romance other than a few flirtations
that wound up no where until Deidra returned to town.
Upon discovering that Deidra and Andy were getting divorced,
Dave vowed to be the one to help her through this painful
time and when Deidra found herself in the arms of serial
killer Bruce Mathis under false pretenses, Dave stood
by her offering her support, friendship and most of
all his heart. Though things started to progress between
them and Deidra found herself having some feeling for
her best friend, ultimately fate had other plans for
her when Dean Carlisle stepped into her life saving
her from her own demons.
|
|
| Upon learning of Dean and Deidra's
blossoming relationship, once again Dave was shattered,
yet he vowed to do the right thing and take a step back.
He once again buried himself in his work until one day
work sent him and Carly head to head once again. His old
feelings for her have returned, but now that they find
themselves on the opposite end of a murder trial, he can't
help but feel resentment towards the way things ended
between them. Time and distance have come between them
and Carly holds a secret that could potentially tear Dave
apart all over again, thus begging the question of whether
or not this lonely heartthrob will ever find true romance
in his life. |

Serena Modine
(Behind Closed Doors)
|
|
I
got up at six
to make your favorite dish
so I sank when you said you weren't
hungry
|
|
|
|
|
All of her life, Serena
has lived for romance - or, at least, the idea
of it. As a little girl, she dreamed of finding
her Mr. Wonderful and living happily ever after
with as many children as the law would allow.
In high school, she even set a personal goal for
herself to find that Mr. Wonderful by the age
of twenty-one and start producing those many,
many children by the age of twenty-three.
Let's just say that one
didn't happen.
We first met Serena when
she was a scant nineteen, wide-eyed and naive
about much of the world around her. She had a
wicked penchant for falling in love with every
other guy she met, something that was rarely -
if ever - returned. Her biggest infatuation of
them all, however, was with fellow loser in love
Phoenix Reeves. Long before they actually met
face to face, Phoenix was the object of Serena's
deepest, delusional desires and the attraction
only intensified when she joined him and Mel on
the Through My Eyes tour, back in the fall of
1986.
After realizing the truth
about her dreamboat (he was gay), she briefly
set her sights elsewhere, on Frankie Wright, before
returning to Phoenix. Convinced that if he met
the right woman, he could change his side of the
fence, she fostered her attraction a little more
each day. Phoenix couldn't believe that she couldn't
get the point and made sure to tell her - in front
of everyone - that he was not interested and never
would be.
It took Serena a while
to recover from that humiliation (and that broken
heart), but she did rebound. To her credit, she's
managed to keep the unattainable Phoenix out of
her fantasies since that mortifying moment. She
even replaced him (for a little while, anyway)
with his own nephew, Joshua Ashby. Phoenix was
all for that, as it gave Serena someone else to
drool over, and shoved Josh and Serena together
at every opportunity. Interestingly enough, too
much of Josh turned out to be a bad thing for
Serena. It didn't take her long to realize that,
despite a nice exterior, there was not much substance
there - something she was desperately craving.
So what exactly is
Serena looking for? Pick up a Harlequin Romance
novel and you'll find your answer. She lives for
the idea of a rogue with a funky name (Phoenix,
perhaps?) to ride up on a white horse, with a
bouquet of flowers and take her away from the
mundanities of her every day existence... and
let's just say that one hasn't happened yet. However,
she holds fast to her hope that it will. She knows
that someday her prince will come. She just hopes
he hurries the hell up.

Charles
Turner Dean, Jr., aka Charlie, has
always been a loser in love. He spent
his teen years romancing older women
with no intention of ever falling
in love. By his early 20s, he has
met Rebecca, who came as close to
anyone ever had of melting his heart.
But then one day Rebecca dumped Charlie,
like she had done to so many men before,
and he was distraught. They got into
a heated argument and an upset Charlie
started a fire that accidentally torched
Rebecca's car.
Rebecca
pressed charges and Charlie faced
serious jail time until his wealthy
father paid off the judge to allow
Charlie to enter the Westside Hospital
Psych Ward as a patient to deal with
his anger management issues. Charlie
was more spoiled than angry, but while
at Westside, he met Adriana Cummings,
an older woman once again, that he
fell in love with instantly. He had
never met anyone as fragile and wounded
as Adriana, but yet so strong at the
same time. Charlie was soon released,
but Adriana was stuck in Westside
indefinitely. Eventually Adriana told
Charlie that she never really loved
him. It was a lie to keep him from
waiting for her, but he didn't know
that. It crushed him.
Charlie tried dating many women after
this, including Heidi and Gretchen
at the same time, but nothing helped.
Now that several months have passed,
Charlie is starting to develop real
feelings for Gretchen. But will it
last or will Charlie be a loser in
love once again?
