SCRIPTS AND SCRUPLES: A new radio daytime drama.
Bored with today's daytime dramas? Irritated with overused plots and
contrived characters? Threatening to boycott your favorite soap you've
watched for years? Then you have something in common with Roger
Newcomb. Dissatisified with current daytime dramas, he decided to
create his own. SCRIPTS AND SCRUPLES debuted on Radio Loger in August,
2003. Shorter than the standard television soap, the show lasts only
five to seven minutes. Still, he manages to pack a lot of emotion and
story into that short period of time.
Families are the cornerstone of SCRIPTS AND SCRUPLES. Taking its cue
from longtime soap families such as the Hughes, Stewarts, and Snyders
from AS THE WORLD TURNS, Newcomb's show features the Richards, the
Jones and the Walkers. "In some way you could compare the Richards
sisters to the 1970's Brooks sisters on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS,"
says Newcomb. "There is also a strong female bond similar to today's
Stewart family on ATWT. The Jones family are all ruthless in their own
way, and the Walkers are dysfunctional and get in each others way a
lot."
Newcomb strives to fully integrate the characters into the storylines.
One plot focused on adultery and how it affected families, friendships,
and even coworkers. "For a story to work you need to feel the impact on
all the characters involved. We have spent a lot of time establishing
the work environment at Manhattan Monthly magazine, and this will
continue."
Actors working on the show include Rich Benson and Kara Starr. SCRIPTS
AND SCRUPLES is the number one online soap on the soap ratings list.
When asked what issues they would like to tackle that they have yet to
explore Roger that "S&S is going to continue to focus on family,
romance and corporate intrigue, but also lead the way for daytime
dramas in focusing on homosexuality and the effects it has on family
and friends. S&S will not shy away from telling real stories that
the public wants to hear."
Their line of stortelling definite is working with only being on the
air since August 2003, Scripts and Scruples is known as the number one
online soap on soap ratings list. Roger attributes this to the show's
shorter format, new things happening every day and making every scene
that he and his writing team come up with count. S&S has no filler
material and even a scene that seems insignificant will ultimately
impact the story in some way.
While you won't find Scripts and Scruples listed in your current Soap
magazine. Roger and his team hopes this will change. "Press is the
magic word. We truly believe in telling interesting stories on S&S
and as the word spreads S&S, and probably other radio soaps, will
grow in popularity. It’s so easy to listen at work or home for five to
seven minutes a day. It’s a much smaller commitment than with TV soaps
and you can still get your continue story fix.
What does Roger attribute to his team's success. "S&S has a very
eclectic mix of actors. Some have very little experience while others
are experienced pros. Gregori J. Martin teaches acting classes and has
been involvedin several projects with current daytime stars. Rich
Benson and Kara Starr also have quite a bit of theatre experience.
When asked where he would like Scripts and Scruples to take him and his
team? Roger replied, " Some of the cast have acting aspirations and
some have writing aspirations and some both. We want to continue to get
better and better and help bring back the good storytelling that soaps
were founded on."
